Vulcan Vents are patented exterior vents that prohibit both dangerous embers and flames from entering a structure during a wildfire. Vulcan Vents are the first to be accepted in the CBC Ch7A Compliance Policy by the Office of the California State Fire Marshal (www.osfm.fire.ca.gov).

Vulcan Vents have been engineered to:

  • BLOCK DANGEROUS FLYING EMBERS from penetrating a structure’s ventilation system.  Wildfires generate embers which fly through the air and can result in an ember attack on a structure and a new fire being ignited from the inside.   Dangerous flying embers do not penetrate the Vulcan Vent design thereby potentially saving structures which are many miles from wildfire flames.
  • PROHIBIT FLAME INSTRUSION through a structure’s ventilation system.  Approaching fire generates heat which triggers the Vulcan Vent to close.  The vent is coated with a non-toxic Firefree ™ intumescent coating, which expands when exposed to a heat source of approximately 350° Fahrenheit thereby closing the ¼ inch (or smaller) vent openings.

Note: Vulcan Vents come with 1/8" screening on the face, the Vulcan honeycomb in the middle and 1/16" screening on the inside to further protect against ember and insect intrusion past the Vulcan honeycomb. This offers the ultimate in protection while maintaining 91% of a standard 1/4" screened vents airflow!

Compare the difference between a standard 1/4" vent and a Vulcan Vent when it really counts...

Standard 1/4" Vent

Standard 1/4" Vent

Vulcan Vent

Fire generated by a 150 kw burner on a standard 1/4" vent. Flame and ember penetration within 15 seconds from the start of the fire.

Same standard 1/4" vent only seconds later with enough fire through the vent to engulf the attic and to destroy the home. Fire generated by a 150 kw burner using the Vucan Vent. No ember or flame penetration.

IMPORTANT AIRFLOW NOTES:
Flame & Ember resistant vents naturally provide less airflow than regular, unprotected vents and Vulcan Vent airflow ratings (NFVA) are approximately 91% that of the same size standard 1/4" screened vent and are listed within each products description.  In retrofit application you may need to increase the number of vents currently in use to maintain proper ventilation.

Please consult your local building codes and/or engineer to determine proper airflow/venting requirements and the number of vents required for your project.

Available in Rear Flange, Mid-Flange and Front Flange configurations for new/stucco, fiber cement and retrofit applications respectively. Standard sizes show below. Custom vents in other shapes & sizes also available, please call for pricing.

DUE TO THE VARIETY OF SIZES, VULCAN VENTS ARE MADE TO ORDER.
CURRENT PRODUCTION TIME IS APPROXIMATELY 14 DAYS

How do Vulcan Vents work?

Baffle-free design allows air to flow freely.

To repeatedly block embers, we use a stainless steel mesh. It’s simple, strong, and effective. Next, is our intumescent honeycomb. This allows air to flow freely and in the presence of high heat, will swell the vent shut, creating an active fire wall when you need it most!

Blocking fire threat before it's too late.

Vulcan Vents are designed to protect against flying embers even before the Vulcan Matrix closure. Embers often attack a home miles before the fire even comes near, spreading flames faster and wreaking more havoc. Our vents are equipped with a screen to catch embers before they enter the home, smolder and ignite, an imperative feature to help keep a home standing during wildfire.

Home safety starts with venting
